CFCU was originally chartered in 1950 as St. Jude Parish Federal Credit Union. In 1966, upon conversion to a state chartered credit union, the name was changed to St. Jude Parish Credit Union. The evolution of Christian Financial Credit Union follows:
The credit union was founded by Mr. John J. (Pat) Sumners, a United States Postal Service employee and parishioner at St. Jude Parish. Mr. Sumners was very active in the Letter Carrier's Union, traveling nationwide. In the late 1940's he was in line to become the Secretary of the National Board for Letter Carriers, a very presigious position. The travel became overwhelming to this dedicated family man and he decided to decline running for the position. With strong organizational skills, he desired to organize something locally. With the assitance of Mr. Richard Quigley, Sr., an Executive with General Finance Company, they started the credit union. Initial funding for the credit union came from 17 charter members who each deposited $100 and then borrowed $100.
In 1998, Northeast Catholic Credit Union ($49 million in assets) merged with SERF Credit Union ($53 million in assets), in what was known as the largest merger of equals during the decade in the state of Michigan. SERF Credit Union (also a Catholic Credit Union) was initially organized as Roseville Sacred Heart Parish Credit Union in 1955. Northeast Catholic Credit Union with only its third CEO, Roger Quitter, and SERF with CEO Richard Quigley, Jr. (son of co-founder of St. Jude Parish CU) united these organizations after almost 20 years of discussion.

SERF grew to its size through numerous mergers over the years including:
It was through the merger between Northeast Catholic and SERF Credit Unions that the name was changed and we became the Christian Financial Credit Union you know today.
On January 1, 2003, Christian Financial Credit Union merged in Fr. Murray Federal Credit Union and St. Mark Parish Credit Union. While St. Mark maintained its field of membership as a single parish credit union until the merger, Fr. Murray Federal Credit Union (which was organized and named for the Paster at St. Clement Catholic Church) had also grown from numerous mergers including MultiParish Credit Union, St. Bonaventure Credit Union, and OMI Credit Union.
Today, Christian Financial Credit Union has 6 branch locations, over 35,000 members, and 100 employees. We are open to anyone who lives, works, worships or goes to school in Macomb, Oakland, Wayne and St. Clair Counties.
We sincerely thank our members for helping us grow into the full-service financial institution that we are today. For you and because of you, we are Christian Financial.
